Exactly one month from tryouts! The season will be here before we know it and we will be off and running!
I have been asked a few times recently about our program slogan 'We Are One'...what does it mean? what do you do to buy into it? do you have other slogans?
So here is my answer...
We don't have other slogans or sayings, we really don't do much around hype (not that there is anything wrong with it, it just isn't my personal style). We Are One applies to our entire program. You get a chance to buy into when you are in kindergarten. You have changes to jump on board every year until you get to high school...and if you end up at Simsbury High School you will really learn what it is all about. It means we play together, we play for each other and do what needs to be done for the success of the team. It means we all have a role and we have to accept that role and continue to be a great teammate and a great ambassador for the program. Everyone in our program is as important as everyone else. The 2nd grade coaching volunteer is as important as the varsity coach, the last girl off the bench is as important as our leading scorer.
It also means that this is not for everyone. If you are not willing to learn how to play our way, if you are not willing to put other things aside to be a great teammate, if you would rather be playing more minutes for a team that doesn't compete...this program is not for you, this slogan is not for you. If you are not willing to BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE, and to HOLD YOURSELF ACCOUNTABLE, this program is not for you, this slogan is not for you.
This goes for parents, players, coaches - we are only at our best when everyone believes in what we are trying to do and supports it. So now you know what it is - what we mean when we say 'We Are One'. It isn't all warm and fuzzy. It is hard work, it is blood, sweat and tears. It is battling through tough seasons, and accepting a role on the team that you earned, not that you wanted...and becoming a better person and teammate for it. It allows us to walk into any game, any gym and look at the other team knowing that we are more ready for them than they are for us. It means you better bring it when you walk in to our gym.
